Sarah Abramowicz, obstetrician surgeon: "Repairing excision is not just about repairing a clitoris or a vulva, it is also about taking care of psychological suffering."

Sarah Abramowicz heads the FGM Victim Care Unit at André-Grégoire Hospital in Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis), which was founded in 2017. Her team provides women with multidisciplinary support. Founder of the Réparons l'excision association in 2022, the obstetrician-surgeon advocates for a comprehensive approach, combining medicine, surgery, psychological support, and sexology.
In September and October 2024, photographer Elodie Ratsimbazafy and sound documentarian Karine Le Loët spent two months immersed in the unit led by Sarah Abramowicz, listening to healthcare professionals and patients. There, they met Fanta, Mama, Karidiatou, and other women who, one day, decided to take back control of their bodies and their emotional and sexual lives. The two journalists tell their story in text, photos, and sounds in the large-format "Repairing the Living." Their work is also available as a podcast, "Repairing the Living," and a photographic and sound exhibition, visible until the end of the summer on the hospital's exterior gates and on the first floor of the maternity ward. The exhibition will then become a traveling exhibition.
